Pretty much, but we knew it was happening.
apart from all the obvious things said in the article, something that really frightens me is that there are people in extremely powerful positions, that can make a huge difference to the outcome of all manner of things that actually have the opinion that it is fine, it is ok, to have these secretive policies, subject to secretive committees and secretive courts! well, i say 'it isn't ok'! they should not have this attitude! we live in what is supposed to be 'a democracy', we are supposed to be and be entitled to be free and have privacy. what has happened here has destroyed that. it has removed all remnants of trust that the government is doing it's job in protecting the nation and the people. in actual fact, it is making us fear the government! that is how it was years ago in Germany when the world went to war to stop that government and that attitude. regardless of what has happened to change the minds of the leaders, there is no excuse for this sort of treatment. surely it's better to live a perhaps shorter, happier life, but free, than a possible longer life under fear of constant surveillance and perhaps worse, isn't it?

As I recall, Woz's first products were "blue" boxes built to rip off telephone calls. Giving talented youth a reason and opportunity to build up their society in spite of their youthful trajectories has it's manifest benefit: I expect that Apple Inc would not exist had Woz lived in the modern America. Either a jail term and branding as a cyber-terrorist, or software patents that only protect the status quo would likely have pushed the nascent tech giant to quit or become a vassal of HP/IBM/etc. The outcome of that conjecture is a much poorer world where our smaller economic pie is horded by the few, a path I think we are well along now.

You know, I've always thought that it just didn't make sense that Valerie Plame's husband was the intended target of her outing. I mean, this is Dick Cheney! If he wanted, he could simply arrange to have the guy found in bed, naked, drunk, with an entire Girl Scout troop as his only visible companions. And the only way he can get back at this guy is to intentionally blow his wife's cover? No, sorry, can't buy it.

What I can buy, though, is the idea that Valerie Plame herself -- who was, after all, working independently to answer that vital question of where the WMDs were in Iraq, or if they existed at all -- might have been the real problem for Cheney, and the real target. A CIA agent loses a lot of her effectiveness once everybody in the world knows she's a CIA agent. All Cheney had to do was figure out a quasi-legal way to get the information to the media.

So you are telling me that they'll behave and never look at data without a warrant despite it being readily available. Right.

Then they say 9/11 could have been avoided if they had all that data. How do both statements fit together? The only possible way they could look at the data if available would be to have a court warrant which means they'd need to argue that there's a probable cause and this could only be done by normal police work which would have raised some data first.

Providing a warrant is given, the telcos store metadata as what was collected for a good while thus making such preemptive surveillance completely unnecessary. Their own arguments kill each other.
