That's assuming pirates could make anywhere near equal value.

But if you could, you'd be keenly protective of it just like the "copyright maximalists"! You may give away your garage band tracks or silly little Youtubery, but if you'd scraped up $100M, coordinated hundreds of talented people, and worked thousands of hours to make a movie, you'd have entirely different opinion about it being "shared" for free. You might even be worried about recovering "sunk (or fixed) costs". Your notions simply don't scale.

How's this for a remix? Just shorten "And, because people who angrily write comments on this site rarely read to the end of the post, I'll just point out that this is a joke, not anything even remotely serious." down to This site is a joke, not anything even remotely serious.

Here's the problem: Can teenagers really consent legally to having all of this stuff online to start with? If we cannot carry forward crimes and such, why should we carry forward things we posted on facebook before our 18th birthdays?

Let's say as an example you did something silly like dress in a costume for halloween that might be considered somewhat racists or sexist according to some future standard (blackface, anyone?). Is it really fair that this image might get drudged up during a job search 20 years later, costing you future employment?

We expect our kids to somehow have adult values and adult levels of intelligence, when honestly many of the adults online don't seem to have it. Is it really realistic to keep all their stuff out there?

So far, none of the bills has received much momentum

Basically, random Senators and House members suggest all sorts of odd legislation, often only so that in the next election they can claim to have championed a cause. Few of these personal bills make it past getting posted as a proposal, they die on the order table at the end of every session like most of the other crap. With 600+ elected grandstanders, the order papers are crowded with this sort of stuff.

So Coles Note: nothing like this has a hope of passing any time soon.

Welcome back, OOTB2! It's good to see your "sweat of the brow, miraculously giving birth to INVENTIONS!" logic.

But won't the "you have to make product" test make patents a lot less valuable? Independent inventors of mass produced products will *never* be able to get a patent, because, for example, it will be impossible to make a pop-tart baking system in their garage. This will inhibit the best kind of invention, the corporate-developed, mass-marketed thinger.

And we aren't even trying to stop it. Then again, the Corporatists in power want those cops doing exactly that: stomping the populace with their jackboots, grinding us underfoot and keeping us afraid.
