EFF are the most rabid piracy apologists in the nation.

The EFF are not, and have never been, piracy apologists, much less "rabid" piracy apologists.

It's exactly like calling the ACLU "Nazi apologists" because they fought for the right to free speech in Skokie, or calling them "Communist apologists" because they fought the Palmer raids.

Anyone who says something this ridiculous shows that they have a radical agenda against free speech and public rights. So, again, thanks for clearing that up.

That perjury clause is a real problem. If you did check whether you or your company owned the intellectual property you're taking down, and you don't own it but take it down anyway, that's perjury. But it's also perjury to claim you checked when you didn't even if the IP turns out to truly be yours.

Perjury is a federal crime, with a 5 year prison sentence attached. Given how many false takedowns happen and how many are automated, it's astounding that people aren't going to prison over this.

A private citizen perjures himself once and rarely gets acquitted. You can even get convicted of lying to the feds because the FBI wrote down something untrue about what you said to them. But if an organization engages in a criminal conspiracy to commit perjury hundreds of thousands of times...nobody in the government cares.

Each individual incident of perjury carries a rusk if going to federal prison for up to five years if convicted.
At some level, there must be someone who said "I don't care how many false positives this program creates, we're using it anyway."

While I have some minor doubts about the success of this platform in the long-term (mostly for reasons having nothing to do with the platform itself), it's excellent to see more of these business models actually making it to the marketplace.

Every single attempt is a benefit to artists, even if (God forbid) the attempt is unsuccessful. The worst that will happen is that it will lead to attempts that succeed. The best that will happen is that it will succeed, artists will have a platform that actually benefits them directly, and the public will benefit from artists' successes without having to sacrifice any of their freedoms.

Whether this particular platform succeeds or fails, it's a win-win proposition for everyone, artists and the public alike.

As MikeC points out, you need to look at the source, but more than that, you need to look past the source.

The real issue at hand here is that society as a whole has lost respect for each other, and in doing so, has also lost the tolerance for youthful exuberance and learning to play with others. Teachers feel so disrespected, principals feel so powerless to stop anything, that the only way they deal with things is by involving a higher authority, the police.

Imagine the outrage if these kids got suspended. Lawsuits from the parents claiming the kids are being denied an education. You could be sure one of them was "not white" and would play the race card, and perhaps if there was a girl involved she would claim that the school security guard touched her inappropriately somewhere along the line. The schools don't want to resolve anything at their own level because the students and the parents don't respect them and attack them at every turn.

So what happens? When anything out of the ordinary happens, they call in the police. They don't deal with it, they call in the authorities. Getting a photocopy of tomorrows math test a day early is now theft, treated by the police. It's all out there.

Where does it come from? Generation Disrespect. We are slowly but surely sinking down to where the whole world is being ruled by people who will use the legal system, guns, and worse to get everything their way, no matter what.

Sort of like the anti-copyright anti-patent people, it's all about pulling the covers there way no matter what, even if they don't deserve it.
