China Mobile Not High On TD-SCDMA
The Chinese government announced a few weeks back that its homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G standard was finally ready. But don't expect China Mobile to use it -- that carrier reportedly wants to use WCDMA to upgrade its GSM network. It's expected that China Mobile will get its way and use WCDMA, while another carrier will follow the CDMA2000 upgrade path -- leaving a new entrant to build a TD-SCDMA network. It's hard to see all the investment in the standard -- both time and money -- paying off for it to be used by just one operator. China's probably got an eye on exporting the technology to other countries, but by the time TD-SCDMA is proven in the market, it could be too late.
