Nokia Sees Strong Demand In 2006 For Mobile Phones

Nokia boss Jorma Ollila says his company sees 2006 as being another strong year for mobile phone sales, and not surprisingly that much of its strength will come from emerging markets in the Middle East and Africa -- areas where Nokia is a market leader. The company has focused on emerging markets in its quest to claw back towards 40 percent market share, putting pressure on its overall margins. Separately, Nokia's COO, who will take over Ollila's job next year, answered criticism that the company needs an "iconic" product like Motorola's RAZR by saying they need iconic products in many different segments. While Nokia is attempting to create these kinds of products across many different areas, there is some question whether its focus on low-end mass-market phones is affecting its efforts elsewhere in the market.
