Nokia Latest To Take Aim At BlackBerry

Plenty of companies are gunning for RIM in the mobile e-mail market, and now Nokia is throwing its hat in the ring with a new platform for corporate push e-mail. It works a little differently than a BlackBerry system, without the centralized network center, and the client software is a Java program that can be installed on any compatible handset once it's been certified by Nokia. In addition to supporting a wide range of client devices, Nokia's also hoping that its system's relatively lower price will help it find its way deeper into enterprises than BlackBerrys. You might be wondering how RIM's ongoing patent lawsuit plays into this, and if Nokia might find themselves in a similar situation. Remember, though, that Nokia paid off, er, licensed the NTP patents last year, presumably at the time so it could launch a version of one of its phones with BlackBerry software. Separately, Nokia also today raised its third-quarter earnings estimates. Perhaps it will be a tougher rival for RIM than Good Technology, which has shed a fifth of its workforce in some "restructuring".
