Hutchison Still Doesn't Understand Interop

While US operators are finally getting a clue about MMS interoperability, other carriers around the world still haven’t learned their lesson. We reported back in January how Hutchinson in Hong Kong was stalling on 3G interconnection with the country’s other carriers, and nearly seven months later, there’s still no agreement thanks to the high fees it’s demanding from other operators. Hutchison wants a connection fee 5 to 6 times what the other operators have agreed to charge each other — a move likely precipitated by its large advantage in number of subscribers. In any case, it’s hard to understand how an operator that’s made video calling such a key part of its offering seeing benefit from keeping its users unable to make video calls to users on other networks.
