Qualcomm And TI Put EV-DV On The Backburner

Qualcomm has responded to inquiries from RCR Wireless News that it is shifting priority away from EV-DV technology, and raising it's efforts toward EV-DO Rev A. Recall that EV-DV is the CDMA2000 path for 3G data and voice (hence DV) where EV-DO is a Data Only 3G solution, where the focus is on improving the speed of data traffic, not voice. The Rev A version is an improvement on the current version used by operators like SK Telecom and Verizon Wireless. Analysts find this a vindication of VoIP, because the data-only versions would be useful for voice traffic only if that voice traffic were IP based, and we know that carriers mostly upgrade networks for improved voice efficiency, not data services. Therefore, the theory is that wireless carriers will increasingly be moving toward VoIP over their wireless networks. We agree with this theory, noting that the 3GPP roadmap also includes VoIP, and that Fixed-Mobile Convergence opportunities are driving the telco worlds (fixed and mobile) toward all-IP approaches. TI, for their part, said they would be shifting away from EV-DV toward UMTS and HSDPA. Update: Over at TheFeature they have more on this story.
