Ireland Gets Interceptors... Not Jammers

As the debate of mobile phone jammers continues, it looks like Ireland is trying to take a slightly more middle ground approach. Rather than mobile phone jammers, they're allowing mobile phone interceptors run by the carriers. The interceptors create quiet zones that block out incoming calls and limit outgoing calls only to approved numbers. The idea, of course, is that this no longer interferes with emergency situations (the biggest complaint people have about jammers), but still keeps the phones quiet. Of course, there are other issues about mobile phone jammers besides just emergency issues, and making use of jammers or interceptors tends to preclude more creative uses of wireless technologies in some places.
