Apparently, some hospitals in the UK are finding text messaging especially useful in reminding patients about outpatient appointments. They focus on one hospital in particular, and it's clearly just at the experimental stage, but so far they have enough evidence to suggest that it really helps prevent missed appointments, and they're hoping to roll the program out on a wider scale. In some ways, this seems like such an obvious use of the technology, I wouldn't be surprised if this is already being done elsewhere as well.
