WLAN Vendors Sign Up WAPI Partners

While Intel still insists that they won't give in to China and produce WAPI (China's own version of WiFi) standard chips, others are moving forward. The Register reports on a number of WLAN equipment vendors and how they have worked out deals with companies to get access to WAPI certification. The article notes that a number of Taiwanese firms have actually received WAPI certification, allowing some US WLAN firms to get around needing to do deals with mainland Chinese companies they don't trust. Linksys (Cisco), D-Link and Netgear have apparently all worked out deals with WAPI certified companies. It's looking like we may really end up with a completely separate standard in China.
