Will WiMax Dominate Broadband Wireless Access?

Never let it be said that WiMax is under-promoted. Despite the fact that a standard has not even been set yet, and there are competing technologies already on the market for wireless broadband, a new report is predicting that WiMax will dominate the wireless broadband market in five years. The basis for this seems to be the big names backing the standard. While WiMax has a ton of potential, there have been way too many wireless technologies hyped up too early, only to have them fail to live up to expectations. WiMax is in a strong position, thanks to everyone falling into line behind the standard - but until it's further along it seems a bit premature to declare it the winner. More interesting, though, is that the report is also predicting that wireless broadband will 3.6% of all broadband connections in the US, and represent a $3.7 billion market. If the technology actually does live up to its hype, 3.6% sounds low - but a lot of that may be due to the slow pace by which people will give up existing broadband connections to move to wireless.
