Intel Moves Towards Powering Devices

Lots of stories today about Intel's latest chip announcements about new processors focused on handheld devices and mobile phones. Intel has been looking at that market for quite some time, but they've had a lot of trouble competing with Texas Instruments. The latest release recognizes the fact that handheld devices are getting increasingly powerful, and need chips better designed to handle that power. Thus, the chips take a variety of technologies from Intel's desktop and laptop chips and moves them down to a package for handheld devices. They're hoping this will convince device/handset makers who need to squeeze more out of their devices while still offering reasonable battery power. The strategy makes sense, though, they will still need to convince companies that it's worth using their chips. While Intel has dominated the market for desktop and laptop processors, they always seem to have trouble when they step out of an area where they dominate.
