Pre-standard WiMAX Service Launched In Chicago
Folks over in Chicago don't need to wait for pesky little standards to get settled as wireless broadband company TowerStream has launched service in Chicago using a "pre-standard" version of WiMax. They expect to be compliant with whatever the final WiMax standard is, but since it's not put in place they can't advertise WiMax compliance. This might actually be a good thing from a marketing standpoint, since most users aren't going to know or care what WiMax is. The article also mentions that the company has WiMax working in New York, Boston and Newport/Providence. It would be interesting to hear any stories from anyone actually using these offerings.
