The Speed Race That Doesn't Matter

We've discussed this a few times before, but Infoworld is picking up on the fact that all the various WiFi networking equipment companies are pushing faster and faster WiFi solutions - despite the fact that for most users they won't get anywhere near the speeds promised, because they're throttled down by their backhaul DSL/cable connection. The speeds advertised only apply to data traveling within the network, and these days, not too many people need such high speeds on their local network. This isn't to say, of course, that such speeds won't become increasingly important as more high bandwidth home networking applications become more common - but right now, lots of people are buying products based on a feature they won't use.
