Telstra Discovers 1xRTT

Not quite sure what the excitement is all about, but it appears that over in Australia, Telstra has discovered 1xRTT, just as companies like Verizon Wireless in the US are doing their best to move past 1x and onto EV-DO. Of course, it sounds like they're not implementing 1x for mobile phones, but as a wireless broadband solution for people to use on their computers. If you ask anyone who uses 1x service from folks like Sprint or Verizon Wireless, they're likely to point that, while it works in a pinch, it's hardly the best way to connect to the internet. Also, Telstra has picked up on the dreadful habit of companies implementing wireless networks to use the awful "up to" in describing the speed. That's right, if you're using their 1x network, you may reach speeds of "up to 144K per second", but you won't ever actually get anywhere near that. Most 1x users will tell you that it tends to average anywhere from one-third to one-half that speed. The thing about starting late is you're supposed to leapfrog what other places have done, not stay years behind.
