Kenyan Mobile Phone Anti-Theft Tech Not So Useful
Over in Kenya, they've set up a system to let people disable service to a mobile phone that has been stolen, but they're finding that it's not all that useful so far. The problem is that in order to disable the service, you have to know the serial number of your phone - and most people aren't interested in the serial number of their phone until, well, after it's been stolen. The article also points out one potential downside to this anti-theft mechanism. If you can figure out the serial number of someone's phone, you can get the phone company to stop it from working.
