SBC Offers Voice-Over-Internet Services Across U.S.

Well, if you can't beat 'em... We've discussed the disruptive threat of VoIP for traditional landline carriers, noting that a VoIP telco can simple operate much more cheaply than a classic telco. How the big boys react to threats from Skype, Vonage, and the like will vary. Sprint is knitting it's wireless group back into the parent, British Telecom is actively bundling services and providing value added services to retain its relevance, and most recently, SBC announced it will "join 'em" by offering VoIP Services Across U.S. One of the advantages of this strategy is that a wireline operator seems a more likely provider of DSL connectivity and voice services, as compared to the cable companies (at least in consumer's perception). SBC will also be able to offer the VoIP services in markets where it currently has no operation. If you feel a breeze, that's the wind of change.
