Another Plan To Track Folks By Their Mobile Phone
It seems like there are plenty of companies these days coming out with products to track the location of mobile phone users. While most of these are GPS-based, a new service has launched in the UK that determines location based on figuring out which base station you're closest to. The article isn't clear if it tries to triangulate between multiple towers, or what, but previous attempts at doing location based applications this way haven't been all that accurate. Just like every other tracking offering, this one is focused on how it can be used to spy on keep track of the location of children. I can understand why some parents might like this, but it still seems like the sort of application designed to make kids resent their parents even more than usual. It certainly doesn't seem to be a good way to demonstrate "trust".
