Cell Phone Enhanced 911 Still Years Away

Well, now that number portability is almost here, the carriers can move on to the next mandatory service to complain about. It shouldn't surprise many folks that it's likely to be E-911 services. The carriers have a decent beef- while they are required to provide the location of their customers dialing 911, the people to whom they are supposed to send the location are not ready to receive it. A new study from the General Accounting Office has found that less than half of the fifty states will have E911 service running by the carrier's 2005 deadline. Maybe things would be a bit further along at the local emergency Public Service Access Points if the local governments didn't divert all the E911 charges they've been tacking on to phone bills towards things like new boots for police officers.
