WiFi On Dal Lake, Indian Kashmir
Last week we looked at WiFi on the ski slopes of Squaw Valley USA, today, Yahoo News has picked up this old story of how WiFi has been deployed to cover Dal Lake in Indian Kashmir. The WiFi service will be offered (unclear how) to sweeten the attractiveness of the lake to tourists, seen as vital to the local economy. Reuters says, "More than a million tourists, almost half from abroad, flocked to the Kashmir's lakes, pine forests and its towering snow-tipped Himalayan peaks each year before a bloody Muslim rebellion against Indian rule broke out in 1989." I can just see the typical family planning a holiday: "Honey, Cozumel is nice, and...okay...there's no bloody rebellion there, but Kashmir has WiFi, so pack your helmet." Addendum: Looks like New Delhi has a problem with Monkeys that terrorize workers and tourists. Perhaps, somehow, a judicious deployment of WiFi could fix that.
