Intel Not Happy With WiFi Tweaks

With all the companies jumping on the WiFi bandwagon, we're seeing more and more that are releasing proprietary extensions to WiFi and "tweaking" the standard. These solutions certainly do offer higher speeds and a broader range, but at the cost of compatibility. Now, Intel is gently suggesting these tweaks are bad for WiFi - though, they won't promise not to do some tweaking on their own. Of course, most of the article is really directed at Atheros' latest eXtended Range (XR) technology for 802.11g. As Derek pointed out via email, this is the same company that was telling people not to buy Broadcom's 802.11g offerings before the standard was approved - because you couldn't guarantee that they would be compliant. Yet, now they're offering their own non-compliant solution. Not very consistent.
