People Want Video On Their Phone?

Yet another study on why people will gravitate to 3G suggests that it's because they want to be able to stream video on their mobile phones. This seems unlikely to me. I don't doubt that it will be one thing people will do - but it seems unlikely that many people will specifically upgrade for the streaming video. Most people are still focused on the phone as a phone, and the idea of video on the phone is not that compelling. It is nice, and it has the potential for some applications that people will use. But, most people still think it's a little too far out there, and don't see why they should bother buying a phone just to get video. They already have TV and the web at home. The phone is for communicating - not watching videos.

Hard as it may be to believe, the evidence coming out of Asia supports the premise that video will drive 3G adoption. SK Telecom launched a service segment on the 3G network built around video, and has hit 1M subscribers (of their 17M) in less than a year.
