The Fight Over Wirelines-To-Wireless Number Portability
While most of the talk around wireless local number portability has been focused on switching from wireless carrier to wireless carrier while keeping the same number, it's still up for debate whether or not the FCC will also require wireline-to-wireless number portability (free registration required to read the article). What's most amusing in the article, though, is the response from the CEO of Qwest when asked about portability of numbers from wireline to wireless: "You can't do it. It's not technically possible." Well, unfortunately for him, that's not actually true. It is difficult, and it will require some (perhaps costly) adjustments in how things are done, but to announce that it's not technically possible is a fabrication.
