Court Ruling Allowing SMS Divorce Is Overturned
Mike posted earlier this week on a Malaysian court's ruling that SMS constituted written communication, and therefore divorce by SMS was legal under Muslim law. Husbands (only) could send their wives SMS communication saying "I divorce you" three times, and the deed done. Well, the Malaysian parliament debated the issue at length on Wednesday, finally overturning the ruling. Malaysia, although predominantly Muslim, is a diverse country with many Chinese and Indians. The prime minister said, "We decided that while it may be correct from other angles, it is not the way to get a divorce,"
