Will MMS Revive Mobile Customization Market?
While ringtones and other mobile phone "customizations" have done well over the past few years, the market has been declining for a variety of reasons - the main one being that the prices are dropping rapidly. Also, the practice of customizing your mobile phone hasn't expanded beyond those under the age of 24. However, Jupiter is predicting that MMS-enabled phones will revive the market in the UK in the next couple of years. I'm not convinced. As the phones and their associated networks become more powerful, they will increasingly have full internet access, where the related content will be available for free. In an open market, unless you're offering something very special, it is very difficult to charge for content. The real value in MMS is in communications - not in downloaded content.
