Handsfree Perhaps, But No Free Ride
While US state and federal legislators debate the issue of allowing drivers to use cellular telephones while driving a car, a German motorist puts the issue in stark perspective. A Cologne court decided having sex while driving is fully legal in Germany. A man was fined for hitting a road sign and leaving the scene of the accident, but the fact that he was having sex with a hitch-hiker when the accident occurred was not illegal. Granted, this is the lighter side of life, but it offers an important point that Techdirt has mentioned before: many things can distract a driver, cell phones being just one. If distraction is the problem, then car radios, discussions between driver and passenger, eating, randy hitch-hikers, and much more should be outlawed - not just cellphones. Don't hitchers just pitch in for gas anymore?!
