CTIA Rebukes Sen. Schumer

The CTIA today put out a press release making fun of Senator Schumer's plan to push for local number portability, saying that the General Accounting Office's own study says that only 11% of consumers want to have local number portability. This is, of course, a bit misleading. The study only asks what they're interested in, which doesn't say whether or not they would make use of switching numbers. Even more important, it isn't so much about whether or not they'll switch, but whether they have the option to. When specifically asked whether or not people would like this option, most people say yes. Is it an economic hardship for the carriers? Possibly, but they've known this was coming for years, and have just been twiddling their thumbs, hoping to tie it up in court.
