Airwaves Used In Creative, Lucrative And Unregulated Ways
The battle over licensed vs. unlicensed spectrum continues to be a major political battle, rather than a technology one. While many people believe that a combination of both models makes sense, that doesn't mean there isn't a battle over how much spectrum is available for what purposes. The Seattle Times has a nice summary of the current battle for more unlicensed spectrum focusing mainly on the recent FCC report on the topic. The one thing that is very clear from the article is that this is going to remain an almost purely political decision.
