Singapore's MobileOne Dumps Wi-Fi, Bets On 3G
MobileOne in Singapore has shut down their WiFi trials, saying they're just going to concentrate on 3G offerings. This might cause a stir among the folks who really think there's a "WiFi vs. 3G" world out there, but I don't think it's that big of a deal. It sounds like MobileOne didn't understand the purpose of WiFi. In shutting down their trial they say customers didn't like it because "it's not really mobile". Did anyone ever say it was? WiFi is designed for "hotspot" computing. No one has been claiming anything differently. Just because MobileOne misunderstood it, and marketed it incorrectly to their customers, doesn't mean that the technology isn't worthwhile and doesn't have its place.
