Public WiFi Access To Be Dominated By Carriers
A recent report from IDC in Europe claims that carriers will dominate the Wireless ISP market within the next few years. I have always agreed that if there was going to be any fee-based PWLAN market in a few years, that it would be dominated by carriers. There are simply no other entities with the deep pockets, the relevant expertise, and the existing customer base to compete. The remaining questions were whether there would even be a fee-based PWLAN market, and whether the carriers would build it, or buy it once it was in place. The answers: yes and both. The IDC report says that this could spell the end for small WISPs - yeah, but they'll be smiling all the way to la banque.
