"Helix" Portable Gaming System Launches
To a Canadian, the name Helix means a 1980’s Hair Rock band, but to the mobile industry it’s the name of a new gaming-centric handheld device launched by Tapwave, a company founded by ex-Palm execs. Although not a "wireless" device, the handheld Tapwave Helix will compete against the dominant Game Boy, and the Nokia N-Gage as a “converged gaming device”: It combines a large screen, high resolution and high color, with a PalmOS organizer. MP3 and video playing are also standard. Tapwave has an interesting marketing angle, as the executives say they are targeting the 18-34 year olds who have “graduated” from Game Boy devices.
