Gadget Overload Relief in Sight
Wired has an article about companies working on SDR technology which would let a single wireless trnasmitter in a device work with many different wireless standards - even at the same time. This would clearly make it easier to offer a variety of wireless technologies in a single device. For example, your PDA could be accessing the internet via a 3G connection, while you use a bluetooth connection to synch with your PC, all while getting location information with its GPS receiver. The technology still has some advances that need to be made before this can go mainstream, and there's also the issue of regulation. There's a fear that the devices can be (either purposely or accidentally) reconfigured to violate radiation limitations or interfere with other wireless signals.
