Spamming Relatives

from the all-in-the-family dept

A cute article in Salon about relatives who spam you with virus warnings, urban legends and other crap. Everyone seems to have the relatives who do this. I have a simple solution that seems to have worked. I do a reply all (so everyone on the list knows what an idiot my relative is) explain that whatever they sent is wrong and give pointers to the explanations as to why it's a hoax/myth/urban legend and tell them to think before they send. What happens is that those folks are embarassed enough that they stop sending me these things. I've heard that they still send them to others, but that's not my problem.

Amen! I used to get this kind of mail from friends and relatives constantly. Like you, I always hit "reply all" and included links to antivirus.ibm.com and related hoax pages and the mail stopped coming. If you are friendly enough, you can do this without actually offending your friends and relatives.
