eCommerce Class Grade Based on How Much Money You Make

from the stupid-idea-series dept

At Carnegie Mellon there is a class in e-commerce where the students have to build a website and 50% of their grade is based on how much money they make. There are way too many reasons why I think this is pretty stupid. Some are explained in the article (suggesting the educational value of such a method is close to nil). Next, the professor claims that this avoids outdated theories of e-commerce, yet he forces students to only make money based on banner ads. Finally, it also ignores the concept of building a brand, since you obviously have a very short time period in which to start making money. But, it does make a good news story.
