iMac Details

from the eat,-eat-jackals dept

I don't really care that much, but everyone seems to be craving the new iMac detals, and so Apple released them today. I don't see anything that impressive. Looks like a standard product upgrade, but for those who want it, here's the news.

    Standard upgrade?!?

Since when does a "standard upgrade" include redesigning the whole thing so that it doesn't need a cooling fan? As always, I'm biased, but I think Apple consistently raises the standards for PCs. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the lack of a built-in CDRW...

Yeah, that's great, technically. But from your everyday user's standpoint? Do they care? I don't think so. I could care less whether or not my machine has a cooling fan. I'll admit there are some nice features added to the new iMacs, but nothing that strikes me as revolutionary from the end user perspective, which is all I really care about.

Mike, why does a computer have to be revoluationary to be impressive? Is the next compaq going to have a gig of ram and 200 terrabytes of harddrive space? Probably not. So just let Job's reality distortion field make all the people happy :)
Seriously though, I think they're cool. The imac isnt going to be a "huge upgrade" until they start coming with g4's, but you gotta admit, they just keeping getting better. What I wouldn't give for one of those graphite ones...

It doesn't have to be revolutionary to be impressive. I really don't care about the next Compaq either. Chances are I won't even say a word about it. I almost never report on new hardware from anyone, because I don't think it's interesting at all. That's why I had trouble even brining up the new iMac stuff, but everyone seems to be screaming about it like it's the second coming... that was my point.

One last comment. The reason why I think Apple's product announcements are "news-worthy" is that (while maybe not "revolutionary") their products change the computer fashions. So they weren't the first with a nice GUI in 1984, but they spurred copycats to produce Win3.1 eventually. So they weren't the first to make colorful desktop units, but it seems like they made it popular. And I think the no cooling fan feature is insanely great. I think more Wintel products will follow suit. Or the nifty front loading CD-players will catch on with Dell. Or the voice-recognition multi-user OS... (Were macs the first machines with standard microphones?)

Anyway, the point is: when was the last time a Wintel box impressed you in the slightest? Never. When was the last time an Apple product impressed you? With the original all-in-one? The Newton? The iMac? The G4? The iBook? Maybe you weren't impressed, but consumer trends were set. Name a Dell model that you remember anyone copying a feature from. Online purchasing is NOT a hardware feature....

    Cooling Fan

For what it's worth, having no cooling fan is a big deal to people who use their computers for digital recording. Cooling fans have a really obnoxious way of becoming background noise when recording. Without the fan, the computer can be is the same room as the mic -- a real plus for home studio folks.
