What is a portal?

Washington Post is reporting on just what the hell a portal is. Apparently, they've announced that they're becoming a portal, and some of their readers were confused, as they had no clue what a portal was. I think once the Washington Post is explaining "portal" to its readers we can safely assume that the word is dead. Time to move on.
