Live Q&A With Rick Falkvinge & Christian Engstrom Concerning 'The Case For Copyright Reform'; Techdirt Book Club

from the join-in dept

Today at 11am PT/2pm ET (and 8pm for Rick & Christian) we'll be hosting a live Q&A session with Rick Falkvinge, founder of the first Pirate Party and Christian Engstrom, the first Pirate Party member elected to the European Parliament. As mentioned this is part of the Techdirt Book Club series, and we are discussing their recently published book called The Case for Copyright Reform. The efforts of Christian and others are already having a big impact in the EU Parliament, with the EU Greens already adopting the Pirate Party's position on copyright. We'll be talking about the book, but I believe both Christian and Rick are open to talking about a wide variety of topics.

Yeah, how could anyone think you're pro-piracy, what with inviting members of the Pirate Party to be your special guests and all? LOL! Have fun with your pirate friends, Pirate Mike. Don't worry, the whole world knows you love piracy. No need to pretend.

    Re:

And for the rest of us who actually have enough intelligence as not shut their brains off when they see the word "Pirate":

    From Wikipedia:

Pirate Party is a label adopted by political parties in different countries. Pirate Parties support civil rights, direct democracy and participation, reform of copyright and patent law, free sharing of knowledge (Open Content), data privacy, transparency, freedom of information, free education, universal healthcare and a clear separation between church and state. They advocate network neutrality and universal, unrestricted access to the Internet as indispensable conditions to some of this.

I'm guessing our esteemed Anonymous Coward also thinks the Green Party consists of Kermit the Frog, The Incredible Hulk, The Green Hornet, Oscar the Grouch and a couple of other very envious people.

You could completly disagree with someone and still do a Q&A.

Hell, I've seen it done with people who clearly hated each other.

    Re:

I guess you haven't been here when he's responded to idiots like you and quite clearly stated, in absolutely no uncertain terms, "I do not condone piracy."

But of course, why would you care even if he came into these comments and said that again? You'd just ignore it in order to keep harping on about "Pirate Mike" and his "pro-piracy" ways.

Why do IP laws need to be reformed? Why do anti-competitive laws need to be reformed? They should just be abolished.

Of course, if you knew anything about, well, anything, you'd know that the PPs don't support "piracy." They support reform and reasonable internet regulation.

But, you're not one for facts, I see. Just that big ad hom brush you like to paint everything with.

Here's a tip: try reading and learning something before continuing to make statements that display ignorance.

    Re: Re:

Yeah, Pirate Mike. Having Pirate Rick on as a hollowed guest doesn't indicate your support of piracy at all. Nah. No one could possibly think that. You're too much, Mikey. Every single thing you say and do is bullshit. I'm still waiting for you to once--just once--actually debate me on a legal issue. You spout out so much bullshit, and whenever anyone calls you on it in the comments you run away. You leave your throng of slobbering fools to do your arguing for you. Why so a'scared?

The "temporary monopoly to spur creation" concept works well, the problem is retroactive copyright exstension removing the temporary part.

    Re: Re: Re:

Here, let's try something. Perhaps you can find on the following link anywhere where it shows a "support of piracy" on the part of the Pirate Party (Sweden), which Rick heads.

    http://www.piratpartiet.se/international/english

I looked and found nothing. But obviously, you're some kind of expert on everything it seems. (And that's written with sarcasm fyi. I doubt Mike would want to debate you on a legal issue, given your glaring lack of knowledge on pretty much anything else, there's no reason to believe you're any kind of expert on anything, much less anything regarding legal issues.)

And it's ironic that you ask Mike why he is so scared, yet you hide behind the Anonymous Coward moniker. Says a lot more about who is really scared. A real man, and a person interested in actual debate of any sort, DOES NOT resort to launching ad hominem attacks on a regular basis. They let the facts speak for themselves, you thus far have yet to present even one.

Also, I am not arguing on Mike's behalf. I'm speaking as someone who is, quite frankly, tired of your bullshit and the bullshit of ACs just like you.

    Re: Re: Re:

Hilarious. You're claiming that every thing I say is bullshit, when you're the one going around falsely accusing me of supporting piracy. I responded and showed why you were wrong, and rather than address the facts, you just repeat your original bullshit claim.

Re: temporary monopoly to spur creation

Are there any evidence to support that a temporary monopoly (of any kind or length) really spur creation more than it hindres it?

The basic problem is that to give the right to one, you have to take it away from all others.

In a ever more connected world, the benefit of no monopoly grows ever larger, but the limited benefit of one person having a monopoly says the same.
