Matthew Inman To Charles Carreon: Take Time Off, Stop Saying Crazy Sh*t To Journalists, Calm Down
from the and-maybe-apologize dept
Now that the details have come out about Charles Carreon’s lawsuit against Matthew Inman, IndieGoGo and the two charities Inman is raising money for (and the details are as nonsensical as we expected), Matthew Inman has written an open letter to Carreon, suggesting that he might want to calm down a bit. He points out that, contrary to Carreon’s claims, he did not “incite security attacks” on Carreon. In fact, Inman not only focused his anger at Funnyjunk, but also went further than necessary to keep Carreon mostly out of it:
So when did this transform from Oatmeal VS FunnyJunk to Carreon VS the internet? I’m going to take a wild shot in the dark here and guess that it’s when you announced to a journalist at MSNBC that you were trying to shut down a charity fundraiser which would benefit cancer victims and endangered wildlife. THAT was the moment when the tide of public opinion focused on you instead of FunnyJunk. I never encouraged anyone to attack, harass, or otherwise contact you. In fact in my original letter I blurred out your contact information and I linked to your Wikipedia page instead of your website. If I’ve directed energy anywhere it’s been to the fundraiser page.
He also tells people not to harass Carreon. He goes on to point out, accurately, that this whole thing has probably been humiliating and points out that the lawsuit is quite likely going to get dismissed, but also offers Carreon a possible path to backing out of this mess:
Your lawsuit is meritless and it’ll probably just get dismissed, but I’m guessing you’re just going to keep trying until you find an angle that sticks with a judge. My advice: take a few weeks off, stop saying crazy shit to journalists, and come back when you’ve calmed down. Write an apology to whomever you feel is appropriate, or just don’t write anything ever again.
Maybe start your own charity fundraiser as way of apology. I’d donate.
Also known as “the stop digging” solution. The same one half the internet has been suggesting for the past week. The same suggestion that Carreon keeps ignoring — leading at least some people to start calling the impulse to keep digging the Carreon Effect. That moniker will likely disappear if he does, in fact, stop digging. But what are the odds of that happening?

just let the numb nut continue burying himself. you never know, he may learn a valuable lesson from this, one that will serve him well for a long time to come. on the other hand, he may just make himself look an even bigger jerk than he has up til now, perhaps even liking the attention
Re: Re:
Nah, whoever heard of an attorney being an attention whore?
Re: Re:
Really I for one hope he keeps going. I have been getting a great amount of entertainment out of watching him shoot himself in the foot. The really funny part is that most people when they shoot themselves in the foot normally do not get mad and grab progressively bigger guns to try and fix it.
Re: Re: The MachinShin Correlation to the Carreon Effect
I think we now have the MachinShin Correlation to The Carreon Effect – When one is digging ones self into an inescapable hole, one simply needs a larger shovel to dig faster!
The “carry-on” effect. He really has the perfect name. I feel that it is his destiny to dig himself deeper than any man has gone before.
Re: Re:
The “carrion” effect has a nice ring to it…
Re: Re: Re:
That one’s even better!
And Carreon is likely to end up as carrion if he doesnt’ stop digging.
Nice change in emphasis that we can’t do with Streisand Effect. 🙂
Re: Re: Re: Re:
“If you carry on, Carreon, you’ll end up as carrion.”
Calm down and try to think rationally? Not happening. Carreon’s going to respond to this with more angry ranting.
Re: Re:
Yep.
About the only way to guarantee that someone keeps acting irrationally is to tell them that they are acting irrationally straight out.
Re: Re: Re:
Pretty much. And anyone who didn’t learn that lesson from their very first girlfriend has really good odds of being a Darwin Award recipient.
Re: Re: Re: Re:
Or is a homosexual male or heterosexual female who may have learned the lesson from his/her very first boyfriend ^_^
Re: Re:
And I for one, can’t wait to see how they respond 😀
He *could* use the Carreon Effect in a positive way attracting new clients. “Charles Carreon – the lawyer that’ll never stop digging! Hey – I’ve got an effect named after me, how cool is that!”
“Take Time Off…Calm Down”
Good idea. He must be tired after all that digging.
Re: Re:
How long before we start seeing “Calm Down and Carreon” shirts? Man, I’d love to see those.
Re: Re: Re:
I am wondering how long until some starts making memes with his image; and then posts them to funnyjunk.
Hell hath no fury like a lawyer scorned
One the one hand we have someone realising that despite the weapon of copyright being available to them, a less antisocial and more conciliatory approach to those who show no respect for authorship is more appropriate in these times (in which the 18th century privilege is dissolving).
On the other hand we have someone with contempt for culture and those who create it, showing no hesitation to exploit both it and the law as a weapon against anyone they feel impugns their patently mercenary and unscrupulous character.
This is not about copyright, but about mankind’s cultural liberty, moral rights, neighbourliness, and the abuse of law (by lawyers as well as legislators).
Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
It is what it is, nothing more.
Don’t be emotionally played by a side in this drama.
Drama comes , drama goes…. “lulz – pass the popcorn”
Guy calls someone a “thief”.
Receives a defamation settlement letter.
Uses charity to emotionally stir public support.
Uses rhetoric that suggests he is 100% innocent and powerless.
Spams the propaganda out.
(Being a SEO , viral marketer, known link generating scammer , $1000 per day earner is irrelevant )
100% innocent and powerless, to address a $20,000 settlement ?
INB4 — “But the principle of the issue”
Yeah — he called funnyjunk “thieves” , what did he expect, a thankyou ?
The Lawyer responds
Says via actions. “Fuck your PR stunt and everything about it.”
Hide behind charity, I will use law to remove the shield.
Doesn’t give a fuck about PR or looking bad, only cares about law and not getting beat by some manipulative punk using charities for his own personal gain.
This is about copyright.
The defamation by Inman attacking a host of “users that share images”, claiming that funnyjunk stole, altered with intent to deceive and then profited from Inman’s work.
But…..It has been manipulated into something else.
Question is … who has been doing all the manipulation ?
PR is not law…. ASK OJ Simpson or Casey Anthony
Re: Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
Let’s see where you made mistakes, boy…
“Guy calls someone a “thief”.”
Guy requests images be removed from website.
Discovers site is not registered with DMCA, so DMCA requests are useless.
“Receives a defamation settlement letter.”
Receives extortion letter from thief’s lawyer.
“Uses charity to emotionally stir public support.”
Wha…?
“Uses rhetoric that suggests he is 100% innocent and powerless.”
Man’s work is posted without his permission.
Sounds like “innocent” to me, boy.
“Spams the propaganda out.”
Spam is sent to people via e-mail.
Artist simply posted info on his website.
Whether it’s “propaganda” or not depends on your viewpoint.
“100% innocent and powerless, to address a $20,000 settlement ?”
Yes, and doesn’t submit to blackmail, either.
“The Lawyer responds
Says via actions. “Fuck your PR stunt and everything about it.””
Incompetent Lawyer responds with incoherent rant.
“Hide behind charity, I will use law to remove the shield.
Doesn’t give a fuck about PR or looking bad, only cares about law and not getting beat by some manipulative punk using charities for his own personal gain.”
Don’t help charity, give ME the money!
Manipulative punk using unwarranted threats for his own personal gain.

Ok…boy, I get it, you have too much penned in grammar skillz !
vtkyntymd trvgo;idrjtoirjdt vytytrvkny crtvt tvrdt
Problem ?
How much money did Inman raise for charity before he bought your support ?
#justAskin #WhyDoYouCareAboutHim
Re: Re: Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
Don’t forget that the ‘law to remove the shield’ probably doesn’t even apply. Inman isn’t based in California, and IndieGoGo is protected by 230. Something the lawyer should have realized at the start.
Re: Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
Your world sounds like a very interesting place to live. Can I get tickets somewhere?
Re: Re: Re: USING charities for his own personal gain.... how moral
Tickets are available, but there is few things to remember.
Using people for your own gain is a requirement, not an option.
You have to learn to choose the people you use wisely, you have to live with yourself after all.
Your skills should never be manipulated out of you, research the people who say, “they are worth giving a fuck about” and want your help. You could unknowingly be helping a real sick-fuck, again…you have to live with yourself
Be no ones personal army.
You should never use an innocent party.(including charities)
If you have no morals … (not a moralfag) you can ignore all that but you will pay with your soul.
Still interested… you need to lurk moar.
You are on your own, now scram!
Re: Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
Your title is not fitting. Your idea of trolling is repeating the same tired lines over and over, failing to realize your points have no merit.
This is about copyright.
in conclusion, murderers
Re: Re: Re: I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
The merit comes in the result.
If I donate to charity, will you then, be on my side ?
Re: Re: Re:2 I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
That’s the problem with squares, man, they think everything has a side.
Re: Re: Re:2 I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
I wonder… how many were donating for the part BEFORE the charities? You know, the part where he takes a picture of himself rolling in the pile of cash?
Re: Re: Re:3 I want Inman to receive that fury for USING charities for his own personal gain.
That I could 100% get behind.
I would donate myself. That is potentially a good troll.
The issue of him calling copying “theft”, would still be there but….
He could roll about in the $20,000 raised, with a caption.
$20,000 you aren’t getting !
problem ?
Have a caption contest.
Force-Meme the shit out of the image and spam it en-mass to funnyjunk.
That, I could get behind with lulz…
Using charities is low.
STOP
Seriously this is a guy who probably has had a lot of power over people for a long time and he can see not only that the power he has disappeared overnight and turned into laughter about himself that the only way he sees out of this is to find some way to try to justify his actions. Even if he gets to sue for some totally random point that results in a warning he will claim he has won.
This is the sign of a desperate man , one who will probably have a nervous breakdown when he cannot get his way, you know the type , the person that daddy gives everything to and is never told no. Sad as this is going to be a very hard lesson for him to learn.
And people showing him pity is just going to anger him more and more, i think a doctor is needed in this case not a Judge.
What’s that?
The Carrion Effect – senseless judicial procedures, feeding off anger about own stupidity. Self-perpetuating.
Dear God, I hope he keeps digging, this is so entertaining.
Re: (+1) or "agree" ... just me sucking up to people : )
Agree, it’s entertaining.
Theoretical BONUS drama ahead!
If he wins even just $1….. ultimate lulz will ensue.
C’mon Carreon… you can do it !
ouch…I can feel the butthurt from here, by the making of that statement.
It would “up the drama” of this several notches.
Who can deny that wouldn’t be a good thing to witness !
Carreon stopping
Aaaand…here’s to Carreon suing Inman for defamation for saying that he says crazy sh*t to journalists in 5…4…3…
That Apology is Going to be Looong...
Well, if he were to do these things Inman’s suggesting and also take up the opportunity to make an apology, he’s going to be spending plenty of time writing to the whole Internet for his stupidity… but then again, why should he apologize? He provided some good entertainment and he has become another symbol in the Hall of Internet Stupidity, and we could use that to show future lawyers what would happen if you mess with something we use on a daily basis!
you heard it here first, folks
The Carreon Effect. Another term coined by Techdirt. I guess we could call that the Techdirt Effect?
You left out his awesome ending where he says ‘hugs and sexy bear kisses’
Inman should read his comments section.

Indeed, fuck off Inman.
Your manipulation of peoples emotions, by hiding behind a charity is starting to fail.
People are starting to learn that the poor cartoonist routine is NOT Legit.
Re: Re:
Inman is not responsible for what other people say, or do. Even if it is on the comments of his own site.
Why is that so difficult to understand? We don’t hold Mike resposible for your idiotic blather.
Re: Re: Re:
Who said Inman was responsible for others comments ?
It shows, not only that people commenting on Inmans site wanted to unleash a troll shitstorm on behalf of Inman , but also that a lot of Anon’s see through the manipulation. Anon’s, of the troll variety know about manipulation, they use it all the time, and refused to be manipulated into a personal army for Inman.
Re: Re: Re: Re:
Much like how one AC keeps commented that he’s “leaving this site” and he’s still here?
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:
“Commenting,” that’s what I meant… man, I really suck at grammar here…
Re: Re: Re:3 Re:
But at least you corrected yourself Cory of PC and are willing to acknowledge mistakes you make. The same cannot be said for the delusional AC you replied to. Who seems to be making the same kind of wild, unsupported by fact rants that Carreon himself has been making.
Now if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to go join Inman’s personal army that I have been manipulated into joining through the use of subliminal messages sent to my brain while viewing some of his drawings over at The Oatmeal. 😛 (Oh, and before the AC above says, “See! Proof that people are falling for it!” Just know that I’m kidding, AC. I just wanted to say that so you could get all excited and then so I could shoot down said excitement.)

Stop feeding the Anonymous Coward of Esteemed Trolling. His name very clearly states what he/she is doing… yet folks still reply.
Re: Re: Re:6
What if, I am legit tho ?
Heaven forbid… I actually think Carreon is a tool and Inman is a tool.
A good result for me is Inman having to pay $20,000.
Charity getting the money.
Carreon being exposed as himself ( what he’s doing..lulz )
Difference is… I am not in the Inman fanclub.
I think he is a right royal, manipulative, using tool.
Poor Inman attacked by big bad funnyjunk…WTF
Inman could pay the $20,000 settlement with a weeks income.
He DID (fact) call funnyjunk “thieves”.
Legally that may be defamation. ( we will see )
If it is…. you get what you get
Donating to charity does FUCK ALL to resolve the situation.
All it was USED for, is manipulating public support.
A reason to dislike him for playing innocent unsuspecting people.
Re: Re: Re:7 Re:
You keep claiming this, but never back it up with anything besides “oh you’re manipulated!”
WHY SHOULD HE HAVE TO? He didn’t do anything wrong (as you have admitted.) Why should he pay someone else money?
Re: Re: Re:8 Fanboys hate it but.....
Manipulated public opinion and media coverage, using charity and his skills as SEO, viral marketer and link generating scam artist to spam his message.
I don’t buy the narrative of….
Poor independent charitable cartoonist V the extortionate thieves
( who created that narrative? )
The law MIGHT say he did do something wrong.
Finally, I am sure he is really a nice guy, but calling filesharers “thieves” for sharing his comics is a blatant lie.
USING a charity for personal gain (PR) is really slimey, that is what pissed me off the most about him. He didn’t have to do it, and there is no indication that he acknowledges that it was a slimeball thing to do.
Raising money for charity is good, but doing it as a way to fight a defamation case, doesn’t even make sense.
HIS positive public perception OR funnyjunks negative public perception… is the reason he raised money for charity.
He used the charity for his own personal gain… in this instance.
Re: Re: Re: Re:
I’d bet that the person who made the “not your personal army” comment meant that comment for the people calling for attacks on Carreon.
Inman may have acted out of anger and spite, but everyone does that at some point in their lives. He intended only to mock Carreon and Funnyjunk (as well as raise some money for charity), and Carreon has turned it into a legal brouhaha Inman obviously doesn’t want to deal with.
Inman did try to provoke a certain emotional response out of his readers, but that doesn’t mean he intended to turn his readership into a “personal army” dedicated to attacking Carreon.
Carreon has done such a great job of creating a “personal army” out of Oatmeal supporters by acting like an ass that he doesn’t need Inman to say “go attack Carreon”.
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:
Mocking someone publicly is protected speech. In this case, he might even be able to make a claim that the charity fundraiser was symbolic speech (like burning a flag or, as a story a few posts up mentions, pissing on a passport).
Re: Re: Re: Re:
but also that a lot of Anon’s see through the manipulation.
1 ?? a lot.
The post claiming to be from Anon was made anonymously, it could have been made by anyone, including Carreon or someone sympathetic to him.
Re: Re:
And your ridiculous assumption is based on one comment?
Or are basing it off the number of “likes” of said comment (which is and even more laughable metric)?
Re: Re: Re:
I “like” this
Re: Re: Re:
What assumption ?
Inman manipulating people is a fact !
Can’t see it ? well guess what.
Re: Re: Re: Re:
… Uh, what? I feel like I’m missing something here. Can you explain more into this nonsensical babbling you’re trying to preach? How is he manipulating people? I only checked the Oatmeal once already and I checked only two or three pictures he made for his site. And… I never felt anything of the sort where he’s providing any subliminal messages to hack into Carreon’s (or should I say your) account and mess around with his website and send him stupid e-mails!
If what you’re saying is true, then show us these facts! Show us how Inman is sending these subliminal messages and prove that you’re not this crazy lunatic you’re painting yourself as.
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:
He is obviously using charity to manipulate public opinion.
How does his comment pointing that out, make him a lunatic?
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:
If I raise money for charity will you come and defend me too, even if I do something wrong?
Re: Re: Re:2 Let the drama and butthurt flow...( Hope Inman loses the legal fight )
Is raising money for a charity not noticeable enough ?
Get’s accused, raises money for charity.
Get real, you may be on his side but…
How is that not a manipulation of public perception, to make funnyjunk look bad for attacking him ?
Re: Re: Re:2 your arguing style.... questionable defame alert !
While I am at it…
Where are these “subliminal messages to hack into Carreon’s account” mentioned ?
I think you made those up in an effort to defame an opposing argument….amiright
Re: Re: Re: Re:
Neat rhetorical trick. Let me try…
Carreon is manipulating people. Can’t see it? Well guess what…
See, it’s fun because it assumes that if you disagree with the premise then you have no standing to argue against it (kinda like the amount of standing Carreon had moments before he donated to Operation BearLove)
Re: Re: Re:2 Lulvz...all this drama !
Thanks for the scoop.
How much did Carreon raise for charity then ?
If it’s moar than $9,001… I am defo on the side that hates both manipulators.
Re: Re: Re: Re:
Yes, AC. It must be Inman manipulating people. It couldn’t possibly be people getting upset at the douchebag who is acting like a nut (or his handful of delusional followers) and who is even now suing innocent charities in his anger at becoming the laughingstock of the internet. Yep, must be manipulation. Because no one could possibly have a problem with the lawyer who is now trying to use the legal system as a weapon just because he can’t handle being made fun of.
[pats AC on the head] There there. It’s okay. Maybe you should locate bob and you can both go off and have a nice talk and share with each other the elaborate conspiracies being orchestrated by Google and Inman, of which only you two are able to be aware of and not fall for.
Re: Re:
So your objection is that about 800 people favour doing something about it and about 700 don’t.
Seems like they should cancel each other out fairly nicely…
Re: Re:
I’m sorry, can you explain to the rest of the class how Inman has manipulated people and what his plans to donate to charity has to do with any of that? Because I’m sure we’re all quite interested to know how you came to this wild conclusion. It should be an interesting lesson in “Conspiracy and Wild Theories/Allegations”.
Inman has done no manipulating. He ripped on a rather shameful letter, which demanded $20,000. That same letter is the one that got people upset at Funnyjunk/Carreon. Not anything done by Inman. Then, to make matters worse, Carreon then started making wild accusations (like you are doing), followed up by his wife doing the same, and then decided to sue two charity organizations (for the sole reason being that apparently Inman picked them at almost random to receive any donations sent to him regarding the $20,000 demand amount).
The one who should have quite obviously fucked off from the get go is Charles Carreon. In this day and age to think sending a letter demanding money won’t get laughed at and posted on the internet for the world to see is stupidity at it’s finest. He made a rather huge and quite public mistake and rather than say, “My bad, let’s just let bygones be bygones and all forget about this thing,” he decided to keep on keeping on. Which in his case means foaming at the mouth and making legal threats and what can easily be seen as defamatory statements about Inman (lest you forget the readily viewable statement claiming that Inman was behind the attacks on his website).
Sorry AC, but you’re taking the side of someone who has very much been in the wrong this entire time. And much like that same person, you’re making wild statements without any proof whatsoever to back them up. And… comments on a blog are quite meaningless, lest we forget the comments on Techdirt (some of which are quite ridiculous at times, posted by ACs just like you).
Re: Re:
Donating to charity doesn’t give YOU a reason to like Inman.
There you go, a conspiracy, wild theory and allegation rolled into one.
I know, it makes no sense, does it ?
Re: Re: Re: Re:
Nothing you write makes any sense. Is English your first language?
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:

Re: Re: Re: Re:
Liking Inman has nothing to do with this. DISLIKING Carreon and his behavior is what’s at point here.
Re: Re: Re:2 Re:
Oh… I sure dislike Carreon. aka..The friend-making machine
( as I have said, multiple times )
I just don’t blindly support Inman because of what Carreon does or how much money he raised for charity.
Is, not supporting Inman 100% , like “The Worst Herricy Man Can Preach”
Or maybe It’s …
someone not emotionally drawn to hate the evil enemies of Inman ?
Re: Re: Re:3 Re:
It doesn’t matter what you think of Inman. Looking through the comments everywhere I would actually say the audience is pretty divided on that subject with half of them loving him and the other half hating him (and the rest of us in the middle), but it doesn’t matter because that really has nothing to do with the issue.
What matters is that Carreon is abusing the law. That has the potential to effect all of us and is a very serious issue. This situation has presented an unexpected opportunity for people to speak up about their concerns and they are doing so with gusto.
As a lawyer, Carreon has an extensive education and had the opportunity to respond to Inman in a rational manner by writing a well considered and intelligent reply and riposte. Even if that meant recognizing his initial errors it would have gotten him much further then then this fiasco will. Even if he actually wins something in court (unlikely as that is) he will still lose since this will pretty much destroy his credentials.
Your attitude toward Inman has nothing to do with this. Other then his position as fire starter and defendant he also has no real part in this. This whole Abuse-of-the-Law thing is Carreon’s work. Thus he gets all the attention, good or bad.
In fact I would even say that at the moment you are guilty of attempting exactly the same thing you are so upset about Inman doing: manipulating public opinion for your own purposes. (Of course that is what trolls do, so perhaps congratulations are actually in order here.)

Yes. We get it. You don’t like Inman. You keep beating us over the head with your opinionated attacks on him. Blah blah blah blah blah. Just give it a rest, already.
Re: Re: Re:2 request denied
It’s not that I don’t like Inman.
I don’t like what he done, is doing.
He is probably a really nice guy. ( Carreon could be too)
Using charities for personal gain is a dick move which makes me think he is a using bastard.
I am not the type of person who takes people at face value so even if, in this instance, Inman is being a using bastard, that does NOT define him as a person.
People are accumulations of good and bad.
I am not the one with a one sided view on how Inman is 100% good or bad. I find that one sided view to be ridiculous and naive.
So what I am arguing against….
The ignorance of the bad, in the face of it’s presence.
Just curious...
The demand letter Carreon sent was supposedly representing his client, Funnyjunk. Yet in the MSNBC interview Carreon said ‘my mother’ when referring to the picture Inman had drawn. Several references he made to Inman’s response letter seemed to indicate he thought it was directed at him personally. Seems to me a lawyer would know better. And now bringing the lawsuit himself instead of for Funnyjunk.
Has anyone heard anything from the owner of Funnyjunk since this fiasco began? Even a no comment?
Re: Just curious...
Not to derail your thread, and I do hope that somebody else can answer your question, but you bring up a good point that hasn’t really gotten much attention:
Carreon has basically gone legal-postal over a ‘yo-mama’ joke. It seems like Inman has struck a real nerve here. We may all be guilty of being very insensitive: what if Carreon’s mom really was molested by a bear?!? What if *he* was? That would almost certainly leave some powerful psychological scarring! Not to mention the almost inevitable physical scarring.
Re: Re: Just curious...
Sorry your question is flawed…
the artwork depicted a mother molesting a bear, making her the aggressor.
Re: Re: Re: Just curious...
So Carreon’s mother molested bears much to the shame of the family.
I do wonder when FunnyJunk will hire a new lawyer with their interests at heart.
Re: Re: Re: Just curious...
Perhaps Carreon is member of NAMBLA? (National Association for Man BEAR Love of America)

Hey dude, look before you dive into the deep end. There may be no water in the pool.
My open letter to Carreon
Dear Chuck:
If you’re going to C&D a blogger or outspoken online presence, write it for public publication. Period. And advise your clients why — and how it may affect them.
When you assume your letter will be published, it forces you to think about presentation, tone, and gods forbid, the merits of your position. It’s one of those nasty side-effects of the Internet Age, but hey, adapt or … well you’ve seen what happens otherwise.
See, as an attorney, your job is to resolve problems; lawsuits are what you do only when the problems can’t otherwise be resolved. And when you keep that in mind, along with the very real chance your efforts will go public, you’ll find maybe it’s not a great idea to send a C&D asking for $20k for protected (even if obnoxious) speech, for claims based on a year-old blog post that is no longer accurate, for a client who itself doesn’t have the greatest online rep. And then you advise your client accordingly.
Oh, and remember, the true, existential purpose of lawyers is to act as a buffer between two parties who can’t talk reasonably. It is not to insert yourself personally into the fray.
Thanks for listening,
A guy who does this type of thing…
I'm waiting for the film
This would make a great British farce: “Carreon Digging” with Charles Hawtrey in the lead role.
Re: I'm waiting for the film
He also reminds me of Basil Fawlty.
“We’ve got him just where we want him” Carreon said to himself as he sits in his office lounger. “Inman is on the run, trying to back out of this lawsuit while still being a tough guy, but I’ll show him, I’m the crusader for the internet, and I won’t let his tyranny continue”
Re: Re:
at first i lol’d
then i was like 😐 cause its prolly true…
The foolishness is strong with this one [Carreon].
I find his lack of sense disturbing.
With a name..
With a name like “Carreon”, is it a surprise that he continues digging ? :).
To be honest, schadenfreude at the expense of Carreon is more fun than watching everyone behave like grownups on the internet.
Digging up!
I think this is very applicable. In both the immortal (and stupid) words of Homer Simpson and Chief Wiggum:

The Carry-On Effect...
If he continues to ‘carry-on’, he risks becoming carrion.

Fuck you Carrion.
Carreon carreon carreon carreon carreon.
Repetition is fun.
Carreon, my wayward son.
How is a pro-cancer anti wildlife lawyer supposed to survive in a world where everyone knows his name?
Popehat has Part V up

Ars Technica has a new post, which has a Quote from Popehat’s Oatmeal Coverage Part V, which I posted about earlier.
Also, it links to Marc Randazza’s blog post about the suit, titled “Carreon Triples Down ? Sues Matthew Inman”.
Tara's real
Popehat’s commenters on Part V appear to have proven that the “Tara Carreon” who’s been posting everywhere, including Techdirt, is the real Tara, & not just some troll impersonator.
They’ve caught her crossposting here posts here to her “library”… & a Linguist has analyzed her posts on various sites.
One also points out that Techdirt hasn’t been added to the suit for her impersonation as further evidence.
YouTube coverage
There is now a video report for this…
NewsyTech has a story up on YouTube now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flH7HGnzfWg
Really, it just recaps less than what everyone here has probably already read, though.
It’s only a matter of time before I see it on TV, isn’t it?
Barbara should sue
OMG this is priceless. Except Carreon should be careful here. If it does continue, and we adapt the “Carreon Effect”, Streisand might just sue him for infringement and “causing confusion”. 🙂

The EFF is stepping in:
?This lawsuit is a blatant attempt to abuse the legal process to punish a critic,? said EFF Intellectual Property Director Corynne McSherry. ?We’re very glad to help Mr. Inman fight back.?
