DailyDirt: Watching Our Weight…

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

One of the most common new year’s resolutions is to try to lose weight and stick to a diet in the coming year. It’s an especially obvious resolution to make after eating way too much at family gatherings. Here are just a few links on the topic of eating too much and gaining more than a few extra pounds.

If you’d like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

...so how about other ways to indicate calories?

How about food packages with realistic servings sizes listed on them? Seriously, do you know anyone who only eats ten chips? Or three cookies? Or half a cup of cereal?

Granted, I may be a bigger eater than some, but there’s no way the average person stops at the serving sizes listed on most packages.

fortunately this is really only a US problem, the rest of the world have learnt how to eat.

so whatever it is you are doing with food warnings and public awareness of the problem, it’s not working!

Possibly you might want to look to what other countries are doing to educate it’s people on how to not become obese, you would also save ALOT of money on unnecessary health care that is required for these overweight people.

Once again, as with gun laws, it’s really not that hard, the rest of the world are wondering what is wrong with you guys that you cant even seem to get the basics right.

Re: Re: Re:

“Look again” .

NO thanks..

and I assure you that denial is not going to help, nor is any bullshit about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ calories.

Simple, stop pumping crap food into your mouth, with no idea how much you have already eaten.

“Average adult Americans are about one inch taller, but nearly a whopping 25 pounds heavier than they were in 1960….Meanwhile, the average weight for men aged 20-74 years rose dramatically from 166.3 pounds in 1960 to 191 pounds in 2002”

find another country in the world with a higher or even close level of FATNESS than America ?

Re: An American Problem

It may have a lot to do with American food but a very little web research will show you that obesity is becoming increasingly global. Newspapers in the U.K., Spain, China and India have all posted headlines on obesity today, 1/1/13.

We have to stop treating people like science fair projects when it comes to food and “dieting”. Science now shows through new tools like PET and MRI brain scans the addiction-related organic changes that take place in the reward system and the prefrontal cortex. This occurs across all additions, from drugs and alcohol to the newly discovered food addiction. This new pioneering research is also helping us to appreciate a holistic and integrative approach to addiction. I was first senior research fellow in the NIH Office of Complementary Medicine. Using food addiction as template, THE HUNGER FIX addiction plan integrates personal empowerment, spirituality, along with whole food nutrition and restorative physical activity. Shame, blame and guilt must be neutralized with compassion, empathy and then the tools of self-empowerment.

Imagine stacks of potato chips where every tenth chip was red

what are you saying, you really cannot even keep track of what you have eaten ? don’t you think that in itself is a problem ??

would it not be better to not buy the junk, crap food in the first place ? If developing the ability to keep track of how much you eat is beyond your abilities.

Re: Calories

now just try to tell that to the other 300 million americans, and they will care why ??

does that making eating crap ok, because some book justifies it for you :)..

There is a clear disconnect with reality and the dream world for a lot of people in the US.

“oh, sure, we are fat pigs, but a book says there are good calories and bad calories, so that justifies us being fat, overweight, obese, diabetic people in the world..

Just like ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people WITH GUNS’..

as if saying people kill people somehow makes it ok to carry or own guns, oh, that right, don’t forget the King of England, you don’t want him to come and kick your ‘fat’ ass..

Re:

I suggest that you do some research prior to making a blanket statement and your response is “no thanks”. Ok.

I am not in denial as I am not denying anything, simply pointing out that your statement “this is really only a US problem” is incorrect.

“find another country in the world with a higher or even close level of FATNESS than America ?”

And this is humorous. First you claim obesity is only a US problem, which implies it is non existent elsewhere. Then you toss out this beauty which challenges anyone to find a country with a higher rate of obesity than the US. This seems to admit there may be obesity elsewhere … amazing. So what is it, do tell.
