DailyDirt: Life, But Not As We Know It

We've noted before that the classification of living things is a bit tricky. It's not just plants and animals anymore. Biologists are continuously discovering creatures that defy the old taxonomies. Here are just a few more examples of the incredible diversity of life on our planet. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

    “Kingdom”, Not “Domain”

    “Domain” is a whole level of division above “Kingdom”. Thus, all the eukaryotes (made up of large, complex cells with separate nuclei and two or more genomes) form one “domain”, within which you have the “kingdoms” of plant, animal, fungus and this new one.

    And alongside the eukaryotes, you have the archaea and bacteria, two more domains of small, single-celled organisms which are considered more different from each other than plants are from animals.

      From wikipedia: Research in the 21st century does not support the classification of the eukaryotes into any of the standard systems. As of April 2010, the situation appears to be that there is no set of kingdoms sufficiently supported by current research to gain widespread acceptance; as Roger & Simpson say: "with the current pace of change in our understanding of the eukaryote tree of life, we should proceed with caution."[31]

      Kingdoms and Domains are hard definitions to maintain when organisms don't really care about being classified... :P
