One More Nail In The Next Generation DVD Effort: Cumbersome Copy Protection

The effort (and the ongoing standards battle) for next generation DVDs is going to end up being a case study in what not to do in trying to move a technology forward. We've already covered the pointless standards battle that is dragging adoption out well beyond what was needed for these new systems to become a success. We've also pointed out that, as people move away from disc-based storage, these offerings become inherently less compelling. However, adding yet another nail to the coffin of next generation DVDs is incredibly cumbersome copy protection, that suggests many people are going to have trouble actually playing these new DVDs. That's just what the industry needs in trying to convince people to adopt yet another new format: beyond consumer confusion over the two competing formats, there's a decent chance that the version they pick won't work properly with certain equipment. The powers that be are acting as if next generation DVDs are a foregone conclusion that everyone will automatically adopt, rather than a new format with many alternatives that actually has to add significant value before people will buy into it. It's not like this is difficult to figure out. The next generation DVD supporters just need to look at next generation CD attempts, like SACD to see where this is headed.

    100% agree!!! I'm watching this whole fiasco unfold and can't understand how those involved can be so blind.

    I for one am building a 2TB+ NAS for my living room. Who cares about fragile plastic discs?

    I will probably die of a heart attack....

    ... from laughing so hard when all their vaunted copy protection is broken within weeks (or even days) of being released.

    This is exactly the reason why I waited a couple years before getting a CD burner and again before getting a DVD burner. I eventually ended up purchasing, but not until the format wars had settled down.

    Copy Protection

    While the DVD industry looses billions on new media and formats, all it takes is a simple update to DVDshrink so the mass can copy the new format, then what? another new format?

    Here is what I recommend, just let it go .. because you will loose either way.

    I like to use this ... Unstoppable DVD Copier ...

    I just use this Unstoppable Copier It doesn't matter what the format of the media is, as long as you can play it on something you can copy it! Bring on the next generation, then the next, I could care less. If it can be sent to my TV, it can be copied!

    That's the point of AACS. You will *NOT* be able to use that if AACS is implemented in BluRay. All your precious little S-Video and Component inputs will not work with your new $1000 DVD player. You must buy a separate digital cable to go with it.
