US Carriers Lay Down Porn Plan

from the more-like-playboy-mobile-than-playmobil dept

Mobile operators have a love-hate relationship with porn. They love the revenues it can generate, but they hate the hassles that come along with it. Now, the CTIA trade group and some US carriers have come up with a set of guidelines for adult content, basically saying they'll have systems and tools to try to keep porn away from kids. The first step is that they'll classify the content in their own portals into what's accessible to people under 18 and those over and force people to prove their age to view it -- sometimes known as the mobile porn license plan -- and will later develop "Internet Content Access Control technologies" -- a fancy term for the filters that generally haven't worked out for other carriers that have tried them. It's pretty debatable if any of these things keep determined kids from seeing any boobies, but if nothing else, they let the carriers tell upset parents "hey, we have tools you could have used" when they complain that little Johnny's mind has been forever warped by the postage-stamp sized image he saw on his phone.

    lack of brains?

    by matt

so now, instead of them focusing on the real problems and making functional phones, fixing up the problems with networks not working together, and many other issues, cellphone companies are going to focus on PORN instead?

AM vs FM: Dont make me listen to YOUR radio

    by Anonymous Coward

Ok, so now porn is sold in brown paper bags... to adults only.

Where are the parents when kids are surfing the internet? if parents dont want their kids to see something, they should monitor those kids like a hawk! Not make it dificult for others who are responsable adults who occasionaly like to look at an attractive woman other than the one they are married to... or those who believe that just one woman isnt enough.

I see this as another battle of Darwin's reproductive theory VS church & religion.

I'd say a little porn is good for everyone - it's how life is (okay, maybe a bit better)
and anyway, i still can barely see how you can accidentally run int porn on a mobile. I mean come on - you actually have to be looking for it on a phone to get it

    But wait

    by Newob

But how will they stop kids from touching themselves? We need more DRM on our phones to stop kids from touching themselves! And if that means we can't say 'fuck' over the phone anymore, so be it.
