When Changing The Game Means Catching Up

from the what's-the-sound-of-a-bubble-ringing? dept

How can you be an online business these days and not have a VoIP service? It is, apparently, the next big thing that everyone must have. Consider it the equivalent to what web-based email was in the bubble 1.0 era. In the bubble 2.0 era, everyone must offer VoIP. The latest is discount dialup ISP, NetZero who is rolling out their me-too service while calling it "game changing." About the only "change" seems to be that this is coming from a dialup ISP -- but many VoIP services can work over dialup. Of course, since the benefit of VoIP is often that it's an always on sort of thing, a dialup solution doesn't make that much sense in many cases. But, if the PR spin says "game changing" than that's the story to stick with. In the meantime, why would people go with this solution over any other perfectly decent solution? Maybe I should have followed through nearly two years ago when I joked about setting up the Techdirt VoIP service.
