Sprint and Nextel, who plan to close their merger Friday, got government approval for their merger on the condition that the new company offer service in the 2.5 GHz MMDS spectrum it will own within four years. An interview with the merged entity's top two execs makes it pretty clear that won't be a problem. Though riddled with inaccuracies (like saying WiMax is "industry slang for wireless broadband"), the article properly reiterates what was probably the single biggest driving force behind the companies hooking up: that combined, they own MMDS licenses covering 80% of the country. Both Nextel and Sprint are running trials in 2.5 GHz spectrum already, so the news isn't particularly surprising. And the buzzword of choice? "Third screen" -- as the new company will be putting a lot of effort into delivering mobile video.
