How Long Was The Huge Credit Card Data Theft Kept Secret?

from the inquiring-minds-want-to-know dept

As more news comes out about the huge security breach from Card Systems that exposed 40 million credit cards to hackers, the story raises even more questions. In an earlier post that discussed how Card Systems wasn't even supposed to have this data, we also noted that there were indications that the company knew about the breach for at least a month before revealing it. Jeremy Wagstaff has been following this case closely and is now pointing out that it looks like the breach was actually discussed many months earlier -- making him wonder who knew about the breach at what point, and how come nothing was done earlier to respond to the issue.

  1. Great move!

I think Visa and Amex's decision to severe their business with CardSystems over this mess is an excellent move.

It sends a message to other data-handling companies, that if the data they hold is ever compromised, they will be put out of business - no questions asked!
