Iran's Internet Filters Are Unauthorized Copies?

from the whoops dept

Well, apparently we now know Iran's position on software copyrights. As more news is coming out about how Iran cracks down on mobile phone dissent and is increasingly blocking internet access to any sites it doesn't like, one of the issues was that an American firm was accused of providing Iran the filters, making it complicit in the blocking. However, the firm has responded quickly saying that they've never licensed their filtering software to any Iranian firms, and any such use is completely unauthorized. The company claims it's taking legal action, but it's hard to see how they're going to be able to stop the ISPs from using the software.

.. or how does one sue people in another country? It's not like a court in, say, Maryland USA has any pull in Tehran.

Oh. Right. The US blocked that project.
