FBI Boss Mum On How Overbudget New Computer System Will Be
from the black-hole dept
The FBI's computer woes have been documented in painful detail -- flailing (and failing) in its update to an antiquated system, then scrapping the overdue, overbudget update, and then developing another lengthy, doomed update plan. So it should be no surprise that FBI director Robert Mueller is being somewhat coy about the details of the new plan. Testifying in front of a Senate committee, he is now saying he doesn't know how much the new system will cost. Judging from previous cost overruns, we're inclined to believe him. Hopefully, politicians will get him to divulge the initial budget, so they can verify the inevitable overruns. However, he did provide a rosier than expected timeline for the project: according to Reuters, Mueller expects it be finished by the end of 2006. That's a couple years earlier than originally planned. As with all things computer-related at the FBI, we'll believe it when we see it.
