Grove Retires, Makes Pitch For His Own Moore-Like Law

from the we-hear-ya dept

Andy Grove's impact on Intel and high-tech cannot be understated, but that alone might not be enough to bestow on him the kind of immortality Gordon Moore will surely receive for positing his now-famous "law". At his retirement today, Grove cited (jokingly, we assume) a case of "Moore envy" and suggested a law of his own: "Technology will always win. You can delay technology by legal interference, but technology will flow around legal barriers." That's an idea that has considerable merit, as we've seen on more than one occasion. Whether it goes down in history as Grove's Law will probably depend on whether or not it's recognized by those who throw up those legal barriers rather than adapt to a changing world.

  • "Technology will always win" is not a good law

    There's lots of failed technology.

Andy would have done better to say:
    "Technology will always beat Law".

Even "Technology will always beat Law" is not correct, because law definitely destroyed the DAT tape format. Well maybe Andy should have said this:

If technology is a river, and everything else is a dam, the river will always overflow.
