Self-Replicating Robots Replicating Away

from the where's-the-gray-goo? dept

There have been plenty of stories about efforts to build self-replicating machines, but for the most part it's been more science fiction than science. However, that's starting to change. Some researchers at Cornell have built fairly simple self-replicating robots that build exact replicas of themselves. I recall seeing dozens of articles like this since the 1980s, where "self-assembling robots" are given pre-assembled pieces of themselves that they just put together. It would be more impressive if they could construct the pieces too.
